From Black to Green: Rolling Old Tires Into New Products

Where are your used tires going? What are they recycled into?

The answer:  Tire-Derived Products (or TDPs)

Products for your home and car!
Recycled Product Manufacturers turn scrap tires into raw materials that are used to make recycled rubber products we use in our everyday lives. From colourful rubber mulch to decorative floor mats to shingles on your roof – there are recycled tire products for everyone!  Even the mouse pad you’re using could be made from scrap tires!

Recycled rubber products are more commonly known as Tire-Derived Products or TDPs.

Most TDPs are made right here in Ontario and include:

  • Rubber mulch                        Car mats
  • Carpet underlay                     Athletic flooring
  • Soaker hoses                         Paving stones
  • Roof shingles                         Speed bumps
  • Parking curbs                         Sidewalks
  • Subflooring                             Mouse pads
  • Traffic cone bases                Commercial flooring
  • Rubber components for your car’s engine

Give yourself the gift of green by considering some of these products for in and around your home.

Dispelling TDP Myths:

  • Did you know most TDPs last longer than products made with traditional materials?  For example, roof shingles made from old tires are fire-resistant and will not rot, blister or crack!
  • TDPs cost about the same as traditional products
  • Most TDPs are available at home renovation stores
